Locus visualises the media coverage given to regions of conflict over the last decade. Using the Guardian Open Platform news articles have been mapped to the relevant cities and towns, creating a spatiotemporal image of news events.
Each place is represented as a geo-located dot that scales in proportion to the frequency with which it appears in the Guardian online. As the time slider progresses the circles grow and shrink giving a picture of which locations are receiving coverage at any given time.
The interactive can be viewed on the Tracemedia site.
Locus was developed as part of the DataArt project, a collaboration between the University of Westminster and the BBC to explore overlaps between the visual arts and Open Data.
